JUST FREESTYLE BY SAM ROSS

JUST FREESTYLE BY SAM ROSS

My friends call me Sammy Rozay, or simply Rozay, after rapper and pear connoisseur, Rick Ross. And it’s for a reason you’d never expect just by looking at me.

Sometimes I freestyle rap. Seriously.

It started with a group of my friends in high school and we would take turns rapping for fun. Leading up to my first ever freestyle, I fully expected to embarrass myself. I could sing along perfectly to all of my favorite rappers, but there was no way in hell I’d be able to piece together an original rap off of the top of my head. However, it turned out that I could hold my own, and I became a lot better than any of my subsequent challengers.

So Sammy Rozay stuck with me and it even followed me into college. A lot of people ask me how I do it and well…I just freestyle. I literally say the first thing that comes to my head. Then I say the next thing that comes to my head. The only rule that I have is that it rhymes and that’s all there is to it.

Freestyling is what creativity means to me. It’s going with your first idea and pivoting to make it work. It’s going with the flow and being confident even when you mess up.

Sometimes you look stupid from the start. Sometimes you start off hot and then stumble over your words. But sometimes you nail it, and I only had to nail it once to earn my nickname.

Shout out to all the pears.
