DON’T THINK ABOUT A PINK ELEPHANT BY BEN VANDERTILL

DON’T THINK ABOUT A PINK ELEPHANT BY BEN VANDERTILL

What are you doing? Let me guess, you are thinking about a pink elephant.

The phenomenon of ‘trying not to think about something’ occurred to me as I sat in the doctor’s office before a recent physical. As the nurse told me to “not to think about anything” and “just relax”, only to be followed by me doing just the opposite and having to take a blood pressure test three times over.

However, by not thinking I have done some of my most creative thinking.

Like many college students, one of my favorite places to be is laying in my bed. However, I don’t always spend my time there sleeping. I spend my time thinking, well actually not thinking. For I have come to realize, it is when I don’t think, that I have some of my best thoughts. Solving problems, coming up with entrepreneurial ideas and ways to create a better world have all come to me while I lay there relaxing.

So, if you happen to come over and I look as though I am doing nothing but relaxing in my bed – don’t bug me, I am busy doing nothing.
