DEADLINES: WHO IS SHE? BY KATE HERMAN

DEADLINES: WHO IS SHE? BY KATE HERMAN

Deadlines You Say?

I sat staring at my phone at around 4:30 this afternoon, November 3rd, just befuddled at myself. I had completely missed my deadline, again. I was supposed to submit this blog at around at midnight a week ago to by published on the Saturday of that week. This was about the third time this semester that I had let a simple deadline submission slip through the cracks, not because I didn’t care or want to do it, but simply because I forgot or wasn’t paying attention to when it was due.

Every time this happens I keep making the same statements “I’ll be better next time”, “it’ll be different next semester”. Then I realized, I say that to just about everything.

I’ll go to the gym later.

I’ll rehearse my scene later.

I’ll do my laundry later.

I’ll call mom later.

I’ll do my homework later.

And on and on it goes.

Change takes time, and you can’t expect to be perfect on the first try, but it can happen. Missing deadlines or not getting stuff done are things that I don’t want to be known for, so now is the time to be more conscious of my responsibilities and what I tell myself. Taking the time on Sunday nights to look at my syllabi and write down all of my upcoming deadlines is a start to making that change.

Start now. Everyone has to start somewhere, so be patient with yourself. After time and practice, the results of your implementation will reveal themselves.
