KICKED IN THE TEETH BY WILL KULIS

KICKED IN THE TEETH BY WILL KULIS

When I screw something up, whether it be not doing so hot on a test, sleeping through half a work shift, or saying something that makes a friend upset, my first reaction is to call my mom.

(yes, I know I am 21).

The first thing I say is “Well shit, that really kicked me in the teeth”.

It seems that every day, week, month, our lives are filled with beautiful moments. Sometimes it’s as small as a perfectly made omelet in your college apartment, reminding us that; yes, we can take care of ourselves. Other times it’s something bigger like a note from a professor saying that they recognize our work and think we are doing well. These moments make us feel on top of the world, ready for anything!

But then there are the other moments…

The times the tires are flat…

The times the recruiting agents tell you they are going in a different direction…

The times the clocks say it’s 3am and that exam in looming…

The times you don’t understand why you aren’t able to ever get ahead…

The times the refrigerators are empty AGAIN and you SWEAR you were just at the grocery…

There seems to be no shortage of them, and sometimes you never know how many will come at one time. I was watching a movie about a year ago and a quote came up on the screen, I am not sure why but is stopped me, it reads:

“Let everything happen to you
Beauty and terror
Just keep going
No feeling is final”
Rainer Maria Rilke

So, when the time comes that life kicks your teeth out, take stock of what you have, and make another appointment with the dentist.
