STICK TO THE STATUS QUO BY SARA DICKEY

STICK TO THE STATUS QUO BY SARA DICKEY

After spending 12 days locked inside, I decided to rewatch all three High School Musical movies. I forgot that the original movie has a meaningful (although cringey) message behind it. Everyone at East High listened to their inner VOJ and never shared their interests outside of the “status quo” set by their social groups until a leader stepped up and challenged the process.

Troy Bolton models the way by sharing his passion for singing even though he was known for being the captain of the basketball team. He inspires a shared vision by performing in the spring musical, showing his classmates that they don’t have to “stick to the status quo”. He challenges the process by balancing basketball and his passion for music, he enables others to act (think of the cafeteria scene) by pushing others to speak their minds. Lastly, he encourages the heart by showing compassion and empathy for others who are different than him.

My 252 journey has taught me to forget the “status quo”, and to refrain from “sticking to the stuff you know”.
