CRICKETS CONJURE CREATIVITY BY CLAIRE BATESON

CRICKETS CONJURE CREATIVITY BY CLAIRE BATESON

I used to get inspiration from going new places and trying things I had never done before, but after COVID I was confined to my basement studio. Spending all hours of the day down in this hole I only see my family and never travel so I have had to find inspiration underground. While my studio looks normal and nice from pictures if you journey down here you will hear the relentless and restless crickets.

At first, I hated them and for much of my day I would let their chirps bother me, thinking of ways to kill them. I built tiny models of traps on my desk and let them distract me through my classes. After nearly a week I saw one of the bastards, I raised my shoe to kill it, but I could not bring myself to do it. I realized that with all the planning I did and anger I had toward them, without them my lonely little studio would be completely silent. As I looked over my desk at all the sharp and blunt objects I had created to end them, I realized they had made me more productive than I knew. Unwittingly, the little devils had made me create without even letting me know and while they drive me insane some days, I give them credit for the inventions all over my desk.

Creativity does not have to be on purpose, it can be second nature if you find the right inspiration.
